Macon County Rescue Squad
Macon County Rescue Squad The Macon County Rescue Squad is an all-volunteer organization that was established in 1975 by members of the Lafayette Fire Department, Macon County Ambulance Service and the local CB radio club. Our members, who range from 18 years to 60 years in age, with both male and female members, now number 50 and come from different parts of the county. The Macon County Rescue Squad performs search and rescue operations. This includes all phases of looking for a missing person including dragging lakes and rivers. Often when a person is located, he is an a very remote area. It is up to the Macon County Rescue Squad to figure out the best way to get him out. This might involve using four-wheel drive vehicles, helicopters or whatever best suits the situation. We have officers and a board of directors which oversees the daily operation of the organization. The members give hundreds of hours every year to help those in need, not only in Macon County but also in the surrounding counties when requested to do so. Being able to help those in need sometimes requires special training to be able to do the job safely. The Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (T.E.M.A.), along with numerous other agencies, provide this training. The members who take part in the classes offered take time out of their busy schedules to attend them. They do this out of the kindness of their hearts and a willingness to help their neighbors. In the last year, we acquired a second four-wheel-drive vehicle, which we use to assist the 911 communications district to verify addresses in the county as well as any other situation in which we need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. We have purchased new radios for all our vehicles as well as one for our office. In addition to the radios, with assistance from the United Way, we purchased more pagers to notify our members in case of any emergency. In the future, we would like to be able to have a couple of personnel at our building all the times to respond to any call for assistance. This would decrease our response time. These personnel would also be able to check every piece of equipment to be sure it was cleaned and ready for the next call. The Board of Directors and the entire membership of the Macon County Rescue Squad would like to thank the citizens, businesses and organizations of Macon County for their support over the years, and a special thanks to the United Way. The United Way is another very good organization that helps the citizens of Macon County. We would like to especially thank the County Mayor, and past County Mayors, the County Commissioners past and present, and the Mayor of Lafayette, and past mayors, the City Council members past and present. Without all these individuals and organizations such as the United Way helping us, we would not be able to help you. |
