Macon County Highway Department Highway Department Garage
The Macon County Highway Department is responsible for the location, relocation, construction, reconstruction, repair and maintenance of the county road system. This includes bridges. Currently, the Highway Department services about 600 miles of county roads, and this number continues to grow. The Macon County Highway Department has its own budget that is compiled by the County Highway Superintendent and the office employees. The budget is based on an approximate 80/20 funding where 80% of the monies come from the State of Tennessee, and 20% of the monies come from Macon County property taxes. The department’s budget covers all aspects of the Highway Department: wages, salaries, benefits, highway and bridge maintenance, supplies, operation and maintenance of equipment, etc. It also includes outlays for new equipment, engineering services, bridge construction, highway construction, right-of-way purchases, etc. In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the County Highway Superintendent coordinates applications for State grants for such things as guard rail installation and road striping. He coordinates with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) on projects that will affect Macon County. He also is responsible for submitting applications for reimbursement due to disasters to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Highway Department is available 24 hours per day in cases of emergency repairs and severe weather. |
